Fish L Catfish Sucking 7cm
Often mistaken for a true catfish, the Sucking Catfish (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) is actually a hardy member of the loach family. Known for their adorable habit of latching onto aquarium glass and grazing on algae, these fish are commonly one of the first “clean-up crew” species introduced to beginner tanks. Small and toothpick-sized when young, they’re algae-eating machines that thrive in cool, well-maintained aquariums.
Native to Southeast Asia, this species is cold water tolerant and incredibly easy to care for in the right environment. However, as they mature, their temperament can shift. Adult Sucking Catfish may become territorial or even aggressive, particularly toward slower-moving tankmates. Because of this, they’re best suited to larger community tanks with fast-swimming companions and plenty of hiding spaces.
With their unique feeding style and efficient algae-cleaning behaviour, Sucking Catfish can be a useful and entertaining addition to the right setup—just be sure to plan ahead for their adult size and temperament.
