  • Dog, Travel

The Wollongong region is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning mountain ranges and wide variety of food, art, and entertainment options. But this coastal town less than 90 minutes from the Sydney CBD is also a great dog-friendly destination to visit, with an abundance of dog friendly beaches, cafes, walking tracks and more!

We’ve put together a list of our top ten dog friendly places in ‘The Gong!

10. Sea Cliff Bridge

You can’t visit Wollongong without a trip to the famous Sea Cliff Bridge, and if you’re visiting with your doggo, you’re in luck because they can come too! This picturesque walk starts at Coalcliff and stretches approximately 600 meters along the pristine coastline. It will take approximately 20 minutes return to walk along the bridge, but if you have a dog with little legs, maybe allow a little bit longer. It is possible to extend your walk in either direction if you’re up for a longer walk, and being a footpath, dogs are allowed. There is also a poop bag dispenser at the southern end of the bridge. Tip: it can be a great place to view whales heading along the coast during migration season, so keep your eyes out!

9. Mantra, Wollongong

If you’re staying in the area overnight with your furry friend, Mantra Wollongong is located in the heart of the city. They offer pet-friendly rooms so your pooch can live it up. If your dog likes traveling in style, we highly recommend Mantra! Tip: you must call in advance to request a pet-friendly room, and an additional charge applies.

8. The Blue Mile

The Blue Mile Pathway is Wollongong’s very own waterfront promenade that stretches from North Wollongong Beach to Wollongong Harbour. It is loved by walkers, runners, cyclists and of course, dog owners! There are various pet-friendly eateries along the way that have outdoor options, so you can sit and enjoy a brew with your doggo. This coastal walkway is a favourite amongst Wollongong pet parents, so your dog is certain to sneak in a few pats along the way. Tip: the views are spectacular, so don’t forget to get a photo for the ‘gram!

7.McCauleys Beach, Thirroul

McCauleys Beach is one of the most popular dog-friendly beaches in the northern Illawarra. It is easily accessed from Corbett Avenue and is a very sociable dog beach that also has a creek for your dog to play in. There is plenty of sand for your dog to run and fetch, and they’re bound to make a new friend every time they visit! Tip: The Wollongong City Council has put together a simple system of signage for beaches. Keep an eye out for green zone beaches, meaning they are off-leash dog friendly beaches!

6. Scarborough Hotel

Scarborough Hotel is located on the cliff top of the Northern Illawarra coast, with sensational views of the Sydney coastline. This historic hotel that dates back to 1886 has a large beer garden and is perfect to get together with friends for breakfast, lunch, or just a cold drink. Don’t worry, your dog doesn’t have to miss out on the fun! This hotel is dog friendly, and when entering with your dog you can use the entrance to the right for direct access to the garden. The friendly staff are always more than happy to bring a water bowl for your dog, but dogs need to be kept on a leash. Tip: it gets very busy on weekends, so make sure to book!

5. East Corrimal Beach, East Corrimal

East Corrimal Beach is one of the most popular dog friendly off-leash beaches in the Illawarra region. There is ample parking at the end of Murray Road, and a great lagoon that runs along the sand almost all the way to the ocean! This lagoon is perfect for dogs that are still getting comfortable with the water, but fancy a dip on a hot day. There is a large sand area that is perfect for a game of fetch or practicing your dog's recall in a busier environment. You can walk all the way around to the Bellambi Boat Ramp and soak in the beautiful views whilst your dog has the time of their life!
