Shortage of tick antiserum - Woonona Petfood & Produce

Shortage of tick antiserum

If you haven’t already heard, there is currently a dire shortage of paralysis tick antiserum in vet clinics around the country. There has been a huge increase in tick cases this year, sparking a critical Australia-wide shortage of a potentially life saving product used to treat paralysis in pets. There is one main manufacturer servicing the market and they are at full production capacity, with shortages expected to last until December.

How does this affect me?

This shortage means if a dog or cat is bitten by a paralysis tick, there is no treatment available. Paralysis ticks are extremely dangerous and the national shortage of antiserum could threaten the lives of pets across the nation. It is imperative that tick prevention is implemented and maintained, as well as daily check overs.

How can I prevent paralysis ticks?

There are many tick preventatives available that provide excellent protection for dogs and cats which are easy to administer and may save your pet's life. Nexgard and Nexgard Spectra are monthly chewables that are registered to kill newly acquired paralysis ticks within 48 hours. Before starting a new treatment, we highly recommend speaking to your local vet about which preventive is most suited to your pet.

Please share this important message with fellow pet owners and help keep your pets safe by making sure they are up to date with their tick prevention!
