Keeping your pet safe during the festive season

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The festive season is a busy and exciting time for humans and pets alike, but it’s important to be aware of potential hazards that can harm our pets during this time. While Christmas is a particularly exciting time of year, it can often be uncomfortable and unsettling for our pets as their environment and normal routines are changed. In addition, there is an increased risk of illness and injury with all the decorations, presents and food. Here are some helpful tips to keep your pets safe during this festive season!

Christmas decorations

What is Christmas without Christmas decorations? Whilst they look great, Christmas decorations can be hazardous to pets if they are not set up correctly. Low hanging lights, ornaments, power cords and tinsel can be a serious hazard for pets. It is best to keep them out of reach or use ornaments that are too big for them to swallow. In addition, you should keep power leads taped to the ground or wall to prevent chewing.

Present unwrapping

There is nothing quite like unwrapping presents with family on Christmas morning, especially if you have children in your household! Once all the presents are unwrapped, be sure to clean up as soon as possible to avoid paper or ribbon being swallowed.

Hot tip: if you buy your pet a Christmas present, it will take their mind off chewing other items ;)

Visitors

If you’re expecting visitors over the Christmas period, we recommend exercising your dog before the visitors arrive. This will help calm your dog and make them less energetic when the visitors arrive. You should also ensure your pet has a quiet room where they can escape the crowds and relax.

Christmas food

Christmas foods can often be toxic to dogs and cause sickness or serious health consequences. You should keep your dog away from things like cooked bones, chocolate, avocado, mince pies and fruit cake. We recommend feeding your dog before you eat and making sure they have their favourite treats on hand to take their mind off your food.

Manage pet anxiety

Having unfamiliar people in the house, changes in normal routine, loud noises and fireworks can be stressful for some pets. You should never force your pet to socialise, and ensure they have a quiet space to escape to if it all gets too much.

Holidays

If you’re planning on going away during the festive season, be sure to arrange someone to look after your pet before you make plans, or consider boarding them. Pets can get lonely if they are used to company and are suddenly left on their own.

By keeping these dangers in mind, you can reduce the risk for your pet and have a happy and safe festive season. We also encourage you to keep your pet in mind when you are doing your Christmas shopping! We have over 100 Christmas toys, treats and accessories that your pet will love. You can also get creative by creating a treasure hunt of treats, making some pet-safe cupcakes, or playing some fun games!
